Wayne La Pierre's argument is that all individual liberties are predicated on the right to own a gun. That is, if you don't have have the right to own a gun, you can't protect your freedom.
He said critics of guns want gun control "so they can eradicate all individual freedoms." Which is not an uncommon view among gun-rights advocates.

Actually wrong. The Court didn’t actually rule that 2A guarantees an individual’s right to own a gun until 2008, in District of Columbia v. Heller. 4x bet 1876-1939, the Court declined to rule that 2A protected individual gun ownership outside the context of militias
