And recall Obama’s taking in a baseball game with Raul Castro (another regime with a terrible human rights record) - and the pundit class’s relative silence over the “diplomatic win” the photo op gave the Castros. It was the right decision by Obama and also by Trump.

Exactly. The potential upside from engagement certainly trumps the argument that continued isolation would have any positive outcome. We refused to engage with Saddam for a decade or so and look where that got us- miscommunication and a disastrous war.
