Don't forever throw yourself at the things that drain you. Some things you can't change and some fights you can't win and some minds you can't change. Let go. Move on. Realize your time is better spent pushing on things you can actually move. I'm 34 and still learning this.

Nothing better than seeing comments such as "efficiently compute a Jaccard similarity metric" right above code performing an entirely unnecessary set operation.

Noticed all SQL/Redis based recommender systems I've seen waste time/space performing union for Jaccard. Y'all realize, once you have the intersection cardinality, you can just subtract it from the sum of the set cardinalities to get the union cardinality, right?

Before I publish a blog on it, anyone wanting to test my standalone pre-processor for PL/SQL, please DM me. It should be fully compatible with all conditional compilation directives and has a few additional options (such as nested $$PLSQL_UNIT within package procedures/functions)

Coming soon: a multi-part blog on PL/SQL in-depth covering tokenization, parsing, preprocessing, intermediate representation, wrapping, optimization, m-code interpretation, native code generation, execution, etc. I’m also planning a session for and

An Oracle trivia question for or any other Oracle Internals developers: does the Oracle SLAX grammar for PL/SQL derive from Herman Fischer's YACC grammar for Ada, released as public domain on March 26, 1984?

While differential privacy is cool for data sharing, it doesn't solve the underlying complications arising from the storage of raw events in compliance with the conditions imposed by GDPR and CCPA. I've been pondering an approximate/probabilistic algorithm to alleviate that...

A question for all my Twitter peeps: who here can recognize they’re in a dream and, once they do, can control it? I can about 90% of the time and have been able to for a long time. Who else can?

The thick database: while it may not be the trend, the case for physical colocation of data and logic can’t be denied. Too many developers and architects make the naïve mistake of performing both logical and physical separation; don’t let it happen to you!

Great post by of on an often over simplified topic. Data network effects MAY lead to scale advantages but often have DMR. Finding the sources / uses for data that create exponential value are rare but incredibly valuable.

Today's weird discovery: Pilotwings (1991) has a set of demos that play if you don't press any keys, and one of them acts differently depending on when your cartridge was made, basically. Does the plane crash or not?
