I always assumed “MOTHER” (Japanese title for the Earthbound series) came from “Mother Earth,” but according to Shigesato Itoi in a 1989 interview with Famitsu, the primary influence was the word “mothership.” 🤯 (He admits it had other meanings too, but still.) 🛸🌎

One of my best friends works in localization in Japan and he really knows his mecha too (he worked on the localization for Super Robot Wars V), but he would never call himself a game developer. So it's definitely an ego thing it seems, sadly.

Mario RPG was the culmination of a years-long friendship between Square & N and also the point where it abruptly ended, as SQ announced FF7 for PlayStation a month before SMRPG shipped. Of course ties have long since mended but this remake still feels like a full-circle moment

Today is 25 years since Final Fantasy Tactics dropped in Japan. Feels like I was barely out of diapers when I reviewed the EN version for EGM, but I stand by the score. Easily one of the best PS1 games ever made🔥
While I'm gushing & feeling anxious about the SF6 attention, may as well let slip that my wife worked as a landscape modeler on Tears of the Kingdom (!!) for 1.5 years and I am immensely proud of her / jealous of her / happy to be linked to my fav series on a technicality (LOL)
Elden Ring is the first game in a long time I can think of that pretty much everyone I know is playing and talking about. I feel like these experiences were more common back in the day when there were less games being released. It's kinda nice - I miss this

Had the honor of getting my Japanese copy of Ice Hockey signed by its designer, Nintendo legend Hideki Konno. One of my favorite NES games as a kid, used to spend countless hours playing with my brother, often getting yelled at by my dad for all the noise we were making (lol)
