Why are there 20,000 plus troops in DC with more mobilizing? It's not for the defense of the event. It's symbolic. It unambiguously answers the question (common in banana republics): Who do the generals and the military support?

If you get 20K troops, the troops that are MAGA might be outnumbered by the troops that are not. That's probably why.

Hmmm It also projects that there are domestic forces that pose a threat First order: sign of strength Second order: sign of weakness

It feeds the narrative of an attempted and barely-averted coup. Since it reinforces that narrative, it is really a sign of weakness? Need an Emmanuel Goldstein for that Two Minute Hate, after all.

Have no military op police experience, so I wondered abt this. Do they really think MAGA will confront them & wage WWI or WWII type face-to-face warfare? What are chances attacks could happen where these forces are not present?

Extremely interested to see how the troops protecting the Green Zone will be depicted in the TV inauguration. Probably shown sparingly, dancing to Lady GaGa. The optics of the 1,000 most powerful Americans on an empty National Mall, surrounded by a sea of troops... Not Good.

They support the peaceful transfer of state power to a new administration in the face of an open rebellion led by a white supremacist demagogue. It's called democracy.

To use language you're used to, John, feels like you're framing that emotionally. Doesn't it "unambiguously" answer a question that's common after a coordinated attack? ie "Should we defend against further potential coordinated attacks?"

If they are there to prevent a foreign invasion it's a bit too late, don't you think?
