random information since I happen to be looking at it today: I've been a professor since 2003 and during that time I've had 8 grants funded by NSF, and had 16 proposals declined by them

suddenly I feel much, much better wasting so much of my life on irrelevant bullshit that at least didn't go straight to the bin
-
so, at some level, professoring is a bad idea if you hate spending time on irrelevant bullshit. on the other hand, some proposal-writing effort is useful because the it is thinking (though usually not writing) that can be reused later.

To be really depressed think how much time you spent writing papers, shortening them to fit 12 pages, negative vertical spacing (we all love this one), reviewing, resubmitting, etc. If we could only write the papers that mattered, and only once, when we were really excited ...
-
ideally we use the Felleisen system under which, if I recall correctly, we are all hired as full professors. when you publish a paper you are demoted to associate prof. next time, you are demoted to assistant prof. if you publish a third paper you lose your job.

In those same 17 years, turnaround time for VC seed financings have diminished considerably. Not hating on academia in the least but can't they come up with a better funding model?
-
I don't think it's hard to come up with better funding models for academia, but it is hard to get them implemented
