yeah it happens when people are concerned about proper credit being allocated. it's not clear that these footnotes accomplish anything.

I don't even know. but was just saying that in the end you produce this body of work and it is not clear to me that any hiring or tenuring committee will go look at and take into account these footnotes.

I just found it weird. When there are lots of names on a paper I assume some of them are just along for the ride for various reasons (that often make perverse sense). Actually authoring with more than 3 people is a helluva task. I typically ignore these kinds of footnotes.
