right, but you're conditioning on GRE/GPA. "GRE/GPA is not predictive conditioned on a filter on GRE/GPA" is not the same thing as "GRE/GPA is not predictive"

like the only way to prove that GRE/GPA doesn't matter is to admit a cohort without considering GRE/GPA at all, and then show that the two cohorts are indistinguishable.

Given until relatively recently SSN indicated DOB and location of birth, SSN was probably mostly an surrogate for parent wealth.

I don’t have a source but I recall seeing some stats to the effect that in the NBA, height isn’t correlated with scoring ability. To get into the NBA, the shorter guys had to have better skill. But height is important; if you only considered skill,you wouldnt get the best team
