    For example, if we could better get across that the whole landscape is also historic, might it help rebalance a public discourse that tends to see cultural heritage as restricted to particular ‘special’ places? (Naming no names!)

    An excellent piece about the possibility of positive change - though in the same spirit it would be good to move on from the simple conflation of the countryside with ‘nature’. I don’t think this is inconsequential...

    I wrote this about a positive shift that I think is happening in ordinary people's relationship with nature:

    Catching up belatedly with . The points are so evidently true it's hard to understand why we need to keep making them. Oliver Rackham was grumbling about "lack of coordination between those concerned with scenery, wildlife, antiquities, and freedom" back in 1986...

    Let’s start now with Q1: What practical measures could we put in place to promote a better of the historic and natural environment at the same time?

    The success of the archaeological work in and around the WHS will be measured not in numbers of artefacts recovered but in the quality of the stories told about the landscape over long periods of time, how it has changed and how it could be different again.

    What everyone seems to have overlooked so far in the Stonehenge tunnel debate is that the stories we tell about the past, even the Neolithic (especially the Neolithic), are never neutral or inconsequential.
