Old stellar populations are red, Young stellar populations are blue, Color images are super useful, And they’re really, really pretty too.

Today on : binary stars from ! Figure 5 is my fav.: (a) The close binary fraction decreases w/ increased primary-star size (lower logg)! This is presumably because closer companions are consumed as the size of the primary gets larger,

My nephew declared to his school that he wants to be an astrophysicist (like his uncle!). His shirt will make my thesis advisor proud ❤️

"We are honored about this recognition for ASAS-SN project, but the best is yet to come," Stanek said. "We look forward to observing the entire variable sky for many more years." Kochanek and Stanek receive Beatrice M. Tinsley Prize

Last night I was going through an old hard drive and stumbled across these gems from my past. I was in a band, and we really liked shoes and ... Post-it notes🤘

I had to fight to be on COBRA for 18 months and pay $23k per year for health insurance, and I’m being kicked off my institution’s health plan next month. They say I’m not an employee.

👏 👏 👏 👏 “host institutions must offer their NHFP fellows ... the same leave, vacation, retirement, and health benefits (as applicable) given ... to their postdoctoral fellows hired on grants or contracts as employees.” Amazing — go ! & please take note

A small thread about the sizes of galaxies. The Tenerife group is proposing a different definition of radius, based on a fixed stellar surface density - see . For a given M/L ratio this is identical to the "isophotal" radius, widely used until the 1990s.

New on the arXiv: et al. (incl. , , & ) look into the effects of the Magellanic Clouds on orbits of MW satellites. The LMC can have a large effect on inferred histories of classical satellites!

Interesting thread. I wrote my first letters of recommendation this year, and I was surprised by (and uncomfortable with) the “on a scale of 1 to 10” type questions. It struck me as odd and not useful to quantify my subjective recommendation. What if I haven’t had my coffee yet?
