Ireland dismisses suggestion it should quit EU and join UKhttps://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/jan/26/john-humphrys-suggests-ireland-could-quit-eu-and-join-uk?CMP=share_btn_tw …

Ideally, Ireland should rejoin the UK and the UK remain in the EU. It won’t yet happen, but the recognition of complex identities and allowance of mingled and overlapping sovereignties is the true human (and Catholic) way forward.

are there not questions of repentance and restitution here, for historic wrongs? If we allow of national identities, how can it reasonably be proposed that a nation, most of whose members wish not to, should become part of another, different nation?

Of course that is out of the question. I am talking about udealitirs and the very longterm.

Nobody in the Republic that I know has ever said this or to my mind even thought about it. It simply doesn't register with us. We aren't British. You are a different country. It might be your big idea but it's so utterly unlikely that it is unimaginable.

No. I love Ireland but it feels no more foreign to me than Wales (less so than the North) or even Northumbria. Hardly anyone thought the way you do in the 19thC. It’s a dangerous political myth. The Anglo-Irish legacy remains an inelminable part of Irish identity as Yeats saw.

Ideally for who, John? Ireland’s done much better away from English (yes, English) rule than it ever did under it.

Not as well as would have all done together. And ‘under English rule’ travesties the 19th C. There are so many half-truths purveyed here.

We have a seat at the EU table, why would we reduce that as part of a UK seat?

Because it would vastly increase your substantive power through influence in London which affects you all the time. We need all to start thinking substantively not formally. Latter kind of thinking is to blame for much of cyrrrnt British impasse.

Why not the UK just stay in the EU? Why does Ireland have to completely change its constitutional status. Where's the benefit for Ireland?
