Some days I sleep poorly, despite getting a full eight hours. It was a mystery, but today I figured out why: I receive robocalls in the middle of the night. Spammers ringing my phone at 3am or 5am. When can I finally turn off my phone's call feature altogether?

Deeply underrated parts of playing video games (especially multiplayer games where you compete) and really spending a lot of time on them as a teen: (1) you learn how to grind (2) you get to feel the emptiness of achievement, that it really is about the journey and not the goal

With employees sitting apart more than a three-minute walk from each other, on vacation, home sick, arriving at different hours of the day, and so on: Most companies are already to a significant extent remote companies; they just don't know it.

Back when I used Snapchat, I got a lot of use out of it being a fast photo editing/mockup app. As a no-nonsense paint app, it’s very good. I’m honestly surprised that all other paint apps I’ve used on iOS have felt less productive — long startup times, too fidgety, etc.

This is infuriating and intolerable because FB Messenger is otherwise a pretty good product -- it's my preferred messenger service that I have open all day! On my phone and my laptop! I don't need email notifications! I am already maximally engaged!

Facebook has somehow learned my real email address, as opposed to the fake one I gave them ten years ago. Now they send me an email _every time_ I receive a message via Messenger. I can't turn it off. I can't even remove my email, that tried to never give them in the first place.

In the 90s, The Simpsons captured the zeitgeist of the time: current events and memes, features of ordinary life, stereotypes, caricatures. A comedic shot of middle-class life in America. Is there anything similar today? Can the zeitgeist of the 2010s be captured in that way?

What does increasing complexity in systems produce? (Businesses, cities, economies, software, etc.) I’ve seen people talk about increasing complexity producing both (1) less understandable, fragile systems and (2) systems buried in structural debt, unable to change. Which is it?

Funny: in order for startup employees to be materially successful, they need to be better startup pickers than most VCs. An employee will get maybe 5-10 shots on goal before they're priced out of the Bay Area, and they've got to score a 25-100x on equity in that time.

An interesting feature of our times in western culture is that seemingly everyone thinks that something has gone dramatically wrong. But people are bitterly divided, conflicting over what/who is wrong. Chances are it’s something underneath, latent to all sides — but what is it?

A fun, alien reading of our civilization: they liked “2001: A Space Odyssey” so much that they made many billions of black monoliths, several per person, that everyone looked into for hours every day. Why? Was it a prayer ritual? We’ll never know... H/t

There are two kinds of people building businesses: (1) believers, with confidence about the shape of the future, attempt to create new things of value (2) skeptics, with doubts about the shape of the future, will construct arbitrages, and make the world-as-is more efficient

Seeing lots of 2020-2030 predictions/trends, but no-one mentioning that Africa will add ~450m people (1.3b -> 1.75b), and the average African, currently age 19, will enter their economic prime. That's 50m+ English speakers and 50m+ French speakers, hitting the global labor mkt

This kind of tweet is an interesting study in marginal value: currently, at ~4500 retweets, the expected value of the next user RTing it is ~$0.75. RTs stop when users think the EV is lower than the total social capital they spend with their followers.
