My child got in trouble because he made jokes & tried to lighten the mood during a lockdown drill instead of cowering in terrified silence. Teacher called me abt it. What have we become?

Thanks for clarifying that the teacher had to do their job. I’m a teacher & if admin/security come by & kids make a sound, I hear about it. They will pound doors to try & provoke reactions. Try keeping 40 teens quiet jammed in a corner on the floor in the dark.

"Try keeping 40 teens quiet jammed in a corner on the floor in the dark" I can't I'magine. I don't like where we r right now. T/u fellow teacher(s) on the tremendous job you do! U r cranking out r future & it shdnt be a sole job but a united effort w/parents, coaches, mentors...

It is truly sad. We all have to know what to do. Key is debriefing. Prepare them w/o scaring them. W/HS kids it’s easier. I feel bad for my elementary peeps. Harder for lil ones to understand.

My daughter was told that they were playing hide and seek with the principal.

The high schools around me do lock down drills every year and it's a big deal. Swat gets involved, we built a barricade of tables and hid in the darkest corner we could find while the cops tried to kick down the doors, then we were marched out with our hands behind our heads
-
We’ve never had anything this involved. Was it a teaining op? Seems unnecessary to make kids repeatedly endure that.

It's terrifying as a parent when you 5 year old comes home from school and shares their experience with you.

As an elementary school staff member, it is terrifying to imagine how I can possibly protect 25 sweet babies from a madman with an assault rifle. The drills give me nightmares. Every time.
-
I honestly can't imagine the horror of having this responsibility. The simulations are terrifying to think about. It's just all so awful.

I was in school when columbine happened. My stand partner in orchestra had just transferred from there. We talked a lot. The schools were identical she said. Next year it was locked down, cameras and metal detectors.

Not exactly nothing. They have: let assault weapons ban expire, given gun manufactures statutory immunity, and banned federal funds from being used to study gun violence. Oh, and thoughts & prayers.

I remember the nuclear war drills - 'Duck and Cover'. I also remember seeing the fall out shelter symbols on the walls of our schools. Some things never change, they just get renamed.

I do. They were foreign adversaries. There is no such thing as freedom if we fear domestic adversaries.
