The political calculation after 9/11 was that even 1 death that could be attributed to jihadist groups was unacceptable, but literally every single other death — guns, reliance on cars, poverty, lack of health care — was not only acceptable, but an affirmation of freedom

If I had to use one artifact as a controlling metaphor for the US after 9/11 it would probably be this mug from one of Guantanamo Bay’s gift shops that reads: “Relax. You’re on GTMO time.”

SCOOP: & I obtained the six closely guarded protest permits Capitol Police approved for Jan 6, including one that was a proxy for Stop the Steal and linked to its organizer Ali Alexander. Rare insight into the secretive police force's ops

Kind of amazing watching the term forever wars become "forever wars." What started as a way to talk about empire without saying empire has now become a way to dismiss the very concept, also without saying it.

I often talk abt how U.S. cable news sporadically swoops in for Afghanistan coverage, so I want to give a shoutout to a small team of Afghan reporters at the Times who for years worked to track war casualties—even if few were reading

layoffs at vice, on this, the day of our union election? another devastating reminder that all workers—including digital media ones who face layoffs every few months—deserve a union contract with just cause, fair severance, and so much more 💔

WGAE elections start today, and if you have a vote, I’d love if you’d consider casting it in favor of the candidates on the Solidarity Slate!

MJ & I got to meet so many amazing people over the course of doing this show -- guests, listeners, collaborators. Thanks to everyone who put us up for a night, RT'ed us, came to a live show, or contributed in a million other ways. More soon. But for now, thanks.

Hi everybody. Been a while since we tweeted from this account. Unfortunately, the occasion is a sad one. We just learned that the company we work for is shutting down immediately, which was very unexpected. For now at least, the show is going dark.

What’s so amazing about this pitch is it boils down to: we desperately need solidarity, just not with all the workers our union is organizing right now

This piece gets at what's missing from a lot of the analysis of the domestic politics, ie "Saigon didn't hurt Ford." I think we're very likely to see a replay of refugee-panic similar to Nov 2015 after the Paris attack, when Trump & every GOP candidate called for a Muslim ban.

There is a very narrow way in which Jan 6 & the rate of collapse of the Afghan gov were intel failures. But to make sense of either — much less both — in a deeper way requires an analysis not only foreign to the US intelligence community’s, but one that the IC defines as a threat
