It's a great story about the town where three civil rights activists had just been murdered with the help of the local sheriff, and it doesn't say "these people are racist." To use it as a model of how to convey racist political motivations ignores the fact that, in the 50 years since it was written, racists have figured out that if you are openly racist, the New York Times will write stories documenting your open racism.

It certainly was easier to paint a picture of abject, naked racism back when people hadn't yet figured out that abject, naked racism was politically damaging in certain constituencies. But I don't think the 1964 model of how to cover racism is a useful guide to the current moment
