  1. Terrific to sit down today with ⁦⁩ and the ⁦⁦⁩ team to talk about the Space Force. There’s a need to improve US capabilities in space, but is a whole new branch of the armed forces the right way to do that?

Strapped the uniform back on today to give the oath of office to the Navy’s newest Ensign, my son Colin. Helluva day.

Terrific piece on writing by Steve Leonard, known to us as ⁦⁩. As he notes, words matter. And “when the sun finally sets on your career, those words may very well represent your lasting contribution to the profession of arms.”

But he’s not in the briefing room. Not on camera. Not live. And not for many months. I’m glad to see him talk to you guys. But Mr. Mattis has an obligation - a duty - to do that more often & more transparently. It’s a big part of the job, whether he likes it or not.

Very thoughtful piece by ⁦⁩: US military may be facing new dangers: “Leaders who stay quiet, info that is not communicated to the public & troops who don't know they only serve effectively by not engaging in ... political agendas.”

Wow, thanks for that context. I did not know that, and if I had, would not have quoted him. My bad. Will delete the tweet.

Trump knows damn well the US is not "paying for Europe's protection" & that allies can't boost defense spending on a whim. This is about his distrust of multi-lateral commitments & his pique over what he considers a trade imbalance with the EU. And he blames Germany for that.

"Trump is trying to conflate his issues over trade and his beef with Europe and the EU with NATO, and he's using our military strength to do that," says CNN's adding: Trump's "trying to hijack" the NATO summit to focus on this one issue

Fair point, Jason. But Trump should remember that the 2% pledge gives them until 2024 to reach, that 2017 saw a net increase in spending across the Alliance & that 3 more nations will reach the goal this year. He could actually claim a little credit, rather than name & shame.

Here’s a piece worth reading on this Independence Day, with our troops still deployed in harm’s way & reporters still in the field covering them. The heartbreaking story of a NYT writer & his soldier son at Gettysburg. Kudos to the great Thom Shanker.

Trump is right to worry about defense spending, but he shouldn't 1) let it dominate NATO summit, 2) fail to note progress many nations have made & 3) hand Putin the gift of an Alliance at odds with itself.
