    - Please find out the number of deaths from Pneumonia and other respiratory illnesses in Wuhan in January 2020, and ideally compare to January 2019. This should help understand the number of deaths not being reported.

Media: "There's a lot of fear around the Corona virus, but when we look at the data, we see the number of deaths is still very low" 🤦🏻‍♂️ Meanwhile in Wuhan, people are dying of respiratory issues and being cremated without testing for 2019-nCoV

One takeaway from this is that (part) of the death toll in Wuhan will be due to lack of sufficient medical intervention. However, should the virus burden grow in other cities/countries, they could easily go down same path. Most hospitals = at capacity already without 2019-nCoV

This article is hard to read. It explains how deaths from respiratory illness, prior to diagnosis of 2019-nCoV, are quickly cremated and not tracked. And how the healthcare system in Wuhan is massively overburdoned, and many are left at home to die, without getting treatment.

"14,380 confirmed cases of 2019-nCoV, an additional 19,544 suspect cases, and 137,594 under monitoring" - source: China's National Health Commission. Found via John Hopkins (excellent) daily email updates:

Other alternative? Temporarily quarantine flight, then swab and Real Time RT-PCR all passengers. Then give entry to everyone who tests negative. Seems resource intensive and highly impractical.

Frustrating the UK still hasn't restricted travel from China. It's not ideal, but seems the only rational action until we understand 2019-nCoV better. Ideally we check for symptoms on flight arrival, but given that you can transmit the disease prior to symptoms, this won't work.

Growing concensus that the paper from Indian researchers is BS / not sound science 🙏 Given that it was published in a pre-print (Biorxiv), so not peer reviewed, it makes sense.

They authors aren't 100% sure, but guess they might affect change in the "host tropism" from animal to human, and then increase the affinity to human cell receptors, and increase the range of cells they can latch on to.

New paper by Indian researchers identifies 4 unique inserts in 2019-nCoV that map to 2 specific HIV proteins, and they don't think this could have happened by accident. I don't know enough to evaluate this paper, but if you know someone who might, tag them

9,809 confirmed, and 102,000 in China under medical observation with possible 2019-nCoV. First time I've heard that number of 102,000 quoted...

Excellent work UK Dept. of Health. Let's not quarantine people who flew in from Wuhan, let's just politely ask them on Twitter to self quarantine for a non specified number of days. The probability of people doing that 100% successfully with no supervision seems low.

Jan 29 - Chinese researchers identify 4 (from 8,000) clinical drugs that can bind to the main replication enzyme (protease) of SARS-CoV. It has 96.1% similarity to 2019-nCoV. Meaning these 4 candidates can be further screened to see if they can inhibit the virus spread in people.

In a similar vein, this paper from Jan 28 looked at antibodies that worked with SARS. Unfortunately the most potent ones didn't bind to 2019-nCoV, but they found 1 that did (phew).

The list they came up with. Hopefully it will inspire further research along the same lines.

Now that's the type of research we can all be glad to see - Jan 29 publication from Beijing researchers. Long humanity, short 2019-nCoV

China's national biosafety laboratory for studying infectious viruses like Ebola and SARS is located in Wuhan. Coincidence? 🤔 Linking to Daily Mail article, but a quick Google verifies the lab is real and indeed located in Wuhan
