You walked through the chronology...carefully. Positing no reason beyond honoring graying forefathers in the monuments of the Woodrow era. Yet as a Georgia native, I know that's when the Klan resurgence started here...and PEAKED in the following decade. Same with the monuments.

Not "inherently" malicious and "compare to Union statue construction" is lawyerly and - and both-sidesism of the worst kind. Tear them down, and move on. it was treason. The statues should be melted down and the Confederacy should be remembered for what it was: Evil. /1

Set up a monument to the *men* killed, or a Tomb of the Unknowns or something. But you cannot fly the American flag over a park with Robert E. Lee under it. He made war on that flag, and you have pick one. /2x

Setting aside what Tom would do if he were king, there's a reason why calls for these things to be torn down is coming now, and not 10 or 20 or 30 years ago... and we all know the reason why.

It's because Democrats no longer contend for the votes of white Southerners, so they can claim to believe things different than what they claimed to believe as recently as the mid-2000s.

I have no problem with the idea that Democrats, once southern white voters were lost to them, decided not to pussyfoot on the issue of statues and flags. But IIRC, the flag issue especially goes back a lot further than 2012.

i'd like to see more statues of Union generals - especially those like George Thomas, a Virginian who remained loyal to the US after most of his peers turned their back on their country.

For a while now I've thought the Texas Legislature should erect a monument on the state capitol grounds to the victims of the Nueces massacre, the Unionist German Texans who opposed slavery and were killed by Confederate soldiers as they tried to flee to Mexico after secession.

That would be a great monument, not least because it would remember something not widely known. (At least not to me, but I assume this isn't something covered in a lot of histories.)

All that ugly stuff happened, & by miracle, the nation survived. I prefer to keep all that history intact, including the war of succession, and the players & their statues, right up front.
