Jared Diamond was DEAD WRONG: Civilization did not emerge in the Near East due to easier access to resources. It had rather to do with ontological shifts in the status of the dead. Cemeteries start to be built in Sumer AWAY from the cities.
Unfortunately, it's not a very good book. David Lewis-Williams did not understand the first thing about shamanism and it comes through in his awkward explanations of Paleolithic art & culture. Besides that, he was an anti-Neanderthal racist.

The idea that art depicts movement seems more universal than there being a cosmic unity. Racist? In a general or anti-Neanderthal way?
