Lacking a take on Afghanistan, I can suggest some books: Ahmed Rashid's "Descent into Chaos" examines nation-building, oil politics, and warlordism in the larger context of Central Asia. Seth Jones' "In the Graveyard of Empires..."/
is a strong survey, prob what I would assign in as a textbook in a class on the Afghan War. Steve Coll's "Ghost Wars" is an engrossing look at US covert policies in AF-PK since the 1970s. And Wes Morgan's "Hardest Place" is an excellent examination of one region of the AF War.
Oh, and Robert Johnson's "The Afghan Way of War" is excellent look at how Afghans evolved fighting techniques against the British, Soviets, themselves, and Americans
