One upshot of this: I'm actively recruiting PhD students to work with me on this 2nd line of work (broadly constructed, understanding how design innovation works; specific context here: ; info on how to apply here: ).

  4. Prospective PhD students: choosing an advisor is super important, but hard! Here is an amazing guide on how to do this, in wonderful detail.

Our new paper in argues against the classical cognitive opposition to deep neural networks as useful scientific models of the mind. We argue that both the brain and deep neural networks belong to a particular family of "direct-fit" models:

  7. Skimming this fascinating paper on and what we can learn from it about the human mind. One stray observation that struck me: best performing facial recognition model has 28 layers w/ 140M params; for language modeling, need 48 layers w/ > 1.5B params!

  8. Research takes A LOT OF TIME. Time to think. Time to plan. Time to execute fieldwork and/or data collection/cleaning databases Time to reflect. Time to read. Time to write Time to take notes. Why aren’t we talking more about this? Good research can’t be rushed.

I created a list of people and orgs working in the long now, inspired mostly by projects mentioned in responses to this thread:

  10. As I often find, good advice for startups are applicable to research. When communicating your research (ideas), best to frame as explaining why you convinced yourself that what you’re working on is a good idea

  12. Many good takes on what transpired at - here's one I like: what happened makes clear as day to us that "2020 is going to be a year of division and polarization. The question is: will this also be the year we start writing a counter-story?"

What are some examples of marvellous projects human beings have undertaken that took ~ a century or more?

What’s your programming style? Are you someone who jumps rt in? Or do you like to think more first? Help researchers in the DevX Lab better understand programmers, learn how you approach programming, and see how you stack up (est: 20mins): (Pls retweet)

I used to wonder why the interfaces on Star Trek are so clunky given that it's centuries in the future, but I guess that's just Enterprise software for you

  18. Some neat example "journals" in this vein. - analyze the topical distribution of the papers in these journals and compare to traditional journals. Could also see whether these do a better job of bridging/linking science's network structure than traditional journals.

  19. What a brilliant idea! Repurposing the infrastructure of journals to support post-publication review, but possibly by accreting on top of other community infrastructures like reading groups, journal clubs, and consortia.

Calling all scientists with relevant domain experience. There are 313 results on for "coronavirus" right now. Almost none of them have attached reviews. Let's fix that by Monday morning. Who's with me?

  21. Encouragement is SO important, esp. in a line of work that is often harsh and makes you (by design) feel stupid bc you're asking questions that we by def. don't know how to answer yet (and may not even have answers). Who can you encourage today?
