At the time, there were few legitimate career paths for hackers. We thought it would be amazing to do what we loved and actually get paid for it. I remember being blown away when I discovered you could actually do hacking for a job. The industry was basically non existent here when I started but I was lucky to score a remote working one. Good times

I could keep going, but I do have a funny story about the fellow at the bottom, Raman N. I had the desk next to him and a good guy. He was a bit of a crypto messianic and really, really wanted to sell certificate-authorities-a-in-a-box. A “builder” not a “breaker.” 1/2

Anyway, Raman also knew the VC partner at Battery, Tom Crotty and somewhat foolishly kept up a separate line of communication with him despite working under the GM. Would call him seemingly randomly and promise all sorts of revenue, naming prospects, etc. 2/3

In some ways, the professional security research community AtStake helped create made it harder to succeed long-term as a firm. Eg the hyper-growth cost footprint (6 global offices, 100+ people within a year, crazy mktg). A talented pro could do much, much better on their own.

Funnily enough, I was talking to Frank Heidt just last week about all the stuff we've collectively “borrowed” from AtStake over the years, even the mundane stuff like SOWs and deliverable templates. And how the alumnae have gone on to do amazing things. A special group.
