That's pretty much what "The Professor of Darkness/White" said to "Black" in The Sunset Limited. An excellent pessimistic movie if you haven't already seen it.

Yes, I have seen it. Loved it. Written by Cormac McCarthy, whom I also admire greatly. I need to get a copy of 'Sunset Limited'. His 'Blood Meridian' is a masterpiece. And, of course, 'No Country for Old Men' is already a classic, the book and the film.
