We talk about the evolution of a species, moving from a lower to a higher level of consciousness. I wonder, therefore, what it says about us (i.e. humans) that we're unable to cease our reign of terror against nature and all non-human life to the detriment of ourselves?

Evolution is directionless and random, we like to say it's about progressing forward but its really much simpler; advantageous mutations will leave more offspring behind.

Exactly. Evolution is not about going from "lower to higher". It's about whatever species can survive the best. That would probably be insects. Nature doesn't give a damn about anything. It's soulless, mindless brute force.
