I've always thought that it was bizarre that England went to war in 1939 to liberate Poland from Germany, but after the war they were okay with Poland being occupied by Russia (the USSR, at the time)

Not completely true. Patton, Bradley, Montgomery and Eisenhower also invaded Germany during WWII. But my point is that it was okay for Stalin's Russia to occupy Poland but not Germany. It's a double standard if ever there was one.
