I think atheists actually believe in God. People don't spend that much time and energy writing and debating against things that they know do not exist. You don't see organizations and literature and debates against the belief in Santa Claus or unicorns.

It's a bit more complicated than that. The belief in God entitles a lot of people in making their belief superior to others and it shows in areas like politics. Also a lot of atheists are former believers who feel like they got a big chunk of their life stolen by lies. 1/2

Hence their activism justified by the prospect of saving others that are falling for those lies. Personally I mostly aim at people with believe I see as detrimental to the fabric of a secular society. 2/2

Sure. And they can be argued. But when you get down the rabbit hole all the way to "the authority of God surpasses any authority of Men" then all that's left is for someone to help them understand that this God was either indoctrinated or a personal choice.
