It's hard to shed all of these religious beliefs of the last several thousand years... the 'abyss' is referenced all throughout the Bible...

Oh, yeah. The so called "beast" in the Book of Revelation is supposed to rise up out of the abyss (it's mentioned in The Omen movie)... there are other references, or similar terms, throughout the Bible
