There's no such thing as "consciousness". It is like "god" or "spirit" or "soul" or "self", etc. Purely imaginary. There is sensory input & thought formation. But there is no substance "consciousness" in which the activity of the nervous system takes place.

Well, truly there is nothing. But to an extent, subjective concepts such as self and consciousness can be useful and have whatever meaning you imbue the concept with yourself. It’s like morality. Even moral nihilists will use the notions of good and bad in their day to day life
