The one burglar who was most aggressive was actually right in following his instincts against the owners. But the rest of the group start to weaken in carrying out the crime. This weakness and sympathy for the owners led to their downfall. Quite a plot twist.

The owners had been kidnapping and torturing people all along. They had one crazed victim in a room where they took the wimpy fat guy & locked him in there. They were far more evil than the burglars. But, yeah, there were no good guys. Survival of the fittest
