The Stoics, in particular Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius, repeatedly speak of how we need to get in touch with our personal daemons. The daemon is like one's inner guiding spirit, or, like a guardian angel, so to speak.

After Christianity conquered the pagan world, the Christians interpreted daemons as being evil (of course, they would) and so the term has come down to us as 'demons' or some kind of sinister entities. The daemons were seen as non-Christian and thus 'wicked'.

It was the Church leaders who made these declarations back in the early days of Christianity. The masses didnt read Biblical texts and were even proscribed against it by Church authorities. The idea of common people reading the Bible is a Protestant outgrowth
