I have to give it to whomever invented religion: they were clearly intelligent enough to know how to manipulate people, and cunning and psychopathic enough to actually do manipulate people.

Religion started in ancient primitive tribal groups seeking to manipulate the forces of nature in their own naive, ignorant ways. Over time, opportunists saw it as a way to control the group by exploiting their fears... and the rest is history.
