I have heard that 'I will be that I will be' is a more direct translation, but not as alliterative.
I know certain theological traditions understand this to express that God's essence is his existence and that he is not contingent upon any reality outside himself.

The Upanishads say 'tat tvam asi', or, thou art that, or, I am that, meaning you are the very essence of being and there is no other, no separate self
