I am envious when I read about someone overdosing on drugs to their death. I tried to drink myself to death in my 20's but was unable to sustain the habit long enough to get the job done. It takes a hearty soul to drink oneself to death.

"Mocking" the pain... I like that. Yes, it's a form of sublimation, like what Zapffe talked about, a way of framing the horror of existence in a way that is manageable.
I havent spent much time perusing the Reddit AN sub. Might go take a look...
