in my country churches were built around the oldest tribal gathering trees, it was tradition to make treaties and promises only in front of the famous tree of the town, even today some regional politicians still go to be in front of the tree to swear office there

There ya go. Gods are essentially tribal spirits, the spirit of the tribe. When that spirit wanes, the tribe also declines. You see that in the Christian West today, the decline in the unity and integrity of the body politic.
