Knowing that these things CAN & DO happen, is enough to deter me from the mere thought of ever having kids. I just don’t know how other people justify doing it.

They can't justify it. It is irrational to think that people are rational. The evidence is overwhelming to the contrary. People do what they do out of habit, out of custom. Very little, if any, rational thought ever enters into the equation.
