If the highest spiritual goal is to get back to Nirvana, why do people on the Path still insist on dragging souls down here into this cesspool of suffering?

Damn good question, UT. The Sanskrit word "nirvana" literally means extinguished or extinction. If you are seeking to extinguish the flame of existence, why the hell breed more of it? Makes no sense. People are idiots.

Not familiar with Langan. Is that like where everything breaks down into its constituent particles and reassembles into new forms for eternity? My atoms will break down and become something else? And on and on, ad infinitum?

Makes sense. Definitely living matter, which are made up of cells communicating with each other, DNA code sending messages, programming, and so on.

I've heard that kind of rhetoric coming from mystics of various cultural backgrounds. I'm not ruling anything out. I'm pretty sure the individual ego is a linguistic construct & has no corporeal existence. But what lies beyond that, it starts to get nebulous.
