They tell you to "live in the moment" or "be here now" because if you think beyond the moment, beyond your immediate sensory gratification, you will start to see the tragedy and meaninglessness of it all

They may not be wrong about that.
In fact, in my experience, they definitely aren't: In embracing the moment, the so-called eternal now, along with abandoning the cruel myth of hope, I, somewhat to my surprise, have found a degree of tranquility in the face of inevitable doom.
