And, the days are growing shorter. We're solar beings, like it or not. It's why in the depths of Winter's shortest days, most peoples have always had some kind of holiday-ish feast w/lights, gifts, etc. - to keep from killing themselves.

Definitely.. the forced gaiety was an attempt to ward off the darkness & low energy - it's effectiveness was limited. And, now, with the added pressure to contrive some sugary, costly, TV commercial version of...Well..You know the drill.
