Anecdotes are not evidence. People experience seeing the Virgin Mary or Krishna and so on in near death accounts. Consciousness exists because of the infrastructure, i.e. the brain & nervous system. There is no evidence it can exist without this apparatus.

A lot of people believe their consciousness (or, soul) travels on after death. But, I don't think there's any evidence to support that. The fear of death is the root cause of religious or metaphysical belief.
