“I” seem to be a function of the body; much like “breathe,” or “heartbeat.” It’s just something the body does.

Agreed. The "I" is a mental construct, a linguistic fiction, used to create a narrative or story. In fact, there is no "I" or self or some permanent center of consciousness. We are a composite of many forces, of which we know little or nothing.
