It costs a lot because the system is so fouled up by lawyers & judges & SJW's & prison & everybody wanting a piece of the action. They all wanna piece of the corpse. It's big money. It takes 20 years to exhaust the appeals process in most cases, in the US.

Prisons in USA have become slave labor camps where corporations have contracts w/ prisons to get products made by prisoners at 75 cents an hour. Inmates can only spend it at prison commissaries where prices are jacked up. Prison gets all the money in the end.

Prisons in USA are not well heated or cooled. Prisons are overcrowded. Violence, rape & murder are commonplace. Mentally ill are thrown in with hardened criminals. Mayhem ensues. Everyone divides up according to their race. Gangs rule the prisons in the US.

Recidivism is high in the US. For the very reason u pointed out. There's no attempt to rehabilitate. Prisoners are to be punished. USA is primitive. Guards will put 2 inmates together knowing they will fight & then gamble on the winner. Drugs are rampant too
