I can't even do that. I tried to stop eating this evening in order to fast. But I had to go get a bowl of cereal. Damn it. I'm useless.

I don't know if they often engaged in fasting in ancient times, but the word "breakfast" comes from a combination of "to break" and "fasting," thus "to stop the fasting that you may have been doing (since yesterday evening or for many days)."
