If you had "free will", you could will yourself to be happy. You could will yourself to be blissed out all the time. You could will yourself to be and feel whatever you want because you're "free", right? But that aint happening, is it? So much for "free will"

I dont think everyone wants their kid to have a high IQ or be a concert pianist. I think most of them really don't know why they're having a kid except that everyone else is doing it or it's an accident. That's because free will has nothing to do with it.

It's more like billions of years of biological programming. We are the descendants of bacteria floating in the primordial swamp. It's instinctive to consume and reproduce. Few ever break away from their genetic and environmental conditioning.

Regarding free will, Sam Harris wrote a short book called "Free Will". It's an easy read, more like a large essay. It's a good starter book to explore the free will vs. determinism debate. I'm not a big fan of Harris, but he did a good job on that one.
