I occasionally run into people who say how much God has blessed them & what a great life God has given them & I'm like "So, all of these thousands of kids that starve to death every day, God doesn't give a rat's ass about them? It's all about you, instead?"

You missed what I said. G-d created a perfect world for us. We fell by disobeying Him so our punishment is life in a world full of sin, death, and decay. We are to work out our own salvation by loving G-d and loving our neighbor, not by serving our own flesh.
