People in general act like humanity is going somewhere, like we are accomplishing some great task, making progress & so on. I don't get it. For christsake, the planet is a giant slaughterhouse. It's pain & suffering & slaughter & carnage everywhere you look.

Actually, it's not less brutal. The yearly systematic torturing and murder of 10s of billions of other sentient beings in today's world is unprecedented. Not to mention the systematic torture & murder of 100's of millions of humans just in the last century.
