It is in Canada. It’s usually a quarter but it hangs out in the cart then you get it back when you return it.
that's not all grocery stores in TO lol. and it's definitely not a thing in Quebec!

At one point, Maxi gave out little loonie keychains that you can use instead of a loonie for their carts which I found very helpful since I rarely carry money on me.
