From what I’ve seen, it’s like another step between intermediate and senior? Bit unnecessary either way imo.

Yeah, weird. Well hopefully if this gets used more generally, the explanation for what it means will also propagate.

Thanks for clarifying! You're the first person that's responded who actually has direct experience with this. (It still seems confusing/redundant -- it's possible for people to be feature leads without being people leads)

Yeah. I know we've had a lot of interesting discussions about this with candidates because what is considered "senior" or "advanced" depends a lot on your current team.

For example, our average seniority level in the studio is over 10 years. But we see a lot of applicants coming in with "senior" or higher titles who have ~5 yrs of experience. But for us, you are not "senior" & we don't have that title in our studio b/c it's meaningless for us.

We peg our salaries according to salary surveys that use titles like Senior and Lead, but we have a super flat structure. You are either a Lead, or you are not a Lead. Everyone who isn't a Lead is typically still very Senior.

But there is a lot of pressure to introduce a matrix and title stratification to "keep up" with the triple-A studios that introduce these arbitrary labels, because for people who are building up their careers, these labels can really matter to them.

I’m remembering now that at Monolith we had Advanced as well...but there it was in between Senior and Principal. It’s really all over the place lol. Wish places would just stick to Junior/Intermediate/Senior/Lead/Director hah.
