One final thought about pacing and why this idea of a 3-4 hour "short game" is compelling (to me, at least). It's very easy to underestimate how much of a film or tv episode (or series) "feeling right" comes down to how it is paced.

True, although both were able to set the price point. $20 was below the $60 standard when Half Life came out (due to Steam sales even $20 is now a lot), and Telltale pretty much opened a new market. Most new games will have to compete too much with existing price expectations.

Yes and no. I think the problem with the "episodic" model is that it goes against the idea of completing something in a 4-5 our session, because by nature there are more episodes. And Telltale's issue was lack of real gameplay and a dependence on licenses, IMO.

I think the HL2 episodes thing doesn't disprove the idea of this 4-5 hour game format working. IMO they could have continued down this path with HL2 and it would have been financially viable. I suspect people internally lost interest.
