Seeing more dragonflies this summer. Climate change? Don’t know much about dragonflies, other than I think they’re beautiful.

Lunch. Just one course today. Don’t need anything else. No implements needed either.

Just came across bank advertisements from 1964. Barclays, Lloyds, Midland and “Westminster”. Looks like they were introducing people to cheques. That kept me employed. My first job was with a company that made readers, sorters and encoders for cheques in order to shift tin.

840am. Been walking for an hour and a half. Met two people walking their dogs, and half a dozen runners. Got to the Long Walk, not a soul to be seen. It’s a glorious day. I guess people don’t walk any more. Strange.

Sometimes leftover-ingredient dishes turn out far better than expected. Had some cooked mackerel from a few days ago, and a handful of baby new potatoes that had just begun to “sprout”. So I added some onions and chillies and did a quick fry-up. Happy with the outcome.

Re-reading ’s Transcendence and enjoying it even more than I did the first time around.

Was up late with friends last night, and had an early meeting in London. So it was time for Iris and June. Bacon brioche. Worth the trek.

Not a fan of the “Bazball” term; even less of a fan of stuff like AusBall or CumBall. Test cricket won yesterday. Resoundingly. What and the current England squad have done is to make Test cricket exciting again. We should all be grateful. Whoever we support.

Entranced by this shiny, numbered, working piggy bank. Provided to young savers by Liverpool and Martins Bank. Separate slots for penny/half-crown, threepence, sixpence, shilling. A slot beneath for notes. And an ability to tell how much is there using inspection windows. Joyous.

Time to eat my hat. I’d doubted the sense of including two players (Crawley and Broad) in the current England eleven, and questioned the role, rather than the presence, of a third (Bairstow). I’ve been proved wrong on all three fronts. Hat duly eaten. Live and learn.

Not a sign you see that often nowadays. I went by three different stations in my post-lunch walk and they all had this sign up. If you knew how to deal with sun glare, you could still use self-service machines. Otherwise you could play hunt-the-cash-machine…

Found it hard to make my selections for the US Open, seems a very open field. In the end I went for Koepka Hovland Scheffler and Cantlay, bench Homa and Morikawa. Been years since I’ve left out all of Spieth, McIlroy, Rahm, Johnson and Fleetwood for a major #USOpen2023 #golf

Had this beautiful beetle visit our garden a few times this year. Yesterday we spotted it on a window sill inside the house. It’s alive and well though it plays dead on demand. Any beetle experts out there?

Home from the Oval earlier than expected. Australia bowled and fielded with discipline and talent. India batted with talent for the most part but failed on discipline. Other than Jadeja’s wicket, the rest seemed to be losses of concentration. Well done Australia!

The question that will settle the WTC final. Will the pitch stay docile-ish or will Lyon get some real bite?

At the Oval, day 5 of the World Test Championship final, 2023. Australia need 7 wickets. India need 280 runs. No team has scored more than 263 to win at the Oval. No team has scored more than 418 to win a Test anywhere. All four results possible. #INDvAUS #WTCFinal2023 #Oval
