The only valid reason to get a job is to lower the marginal cost of books. There is no other.

Great paper by and Carla Handley in NC. They apply multi-level cultural evolutionary theory to cooperation in Kenya and nail it. Cultural FSTs are large enough to sustain substantial cooperation among tribes (0.2). They are MUCH larger than genetic FSTs (.002)

These are obviously contradictory, but so far no one seems to be talking about it. It just goes to show, talk is cheap and non-binding, for voters and parties alike.

It's interesting how bipolar national politics can be. At the same time that pretty much all parties have adopted environmentalist talking points, they are also now fighting tooth-and-nail for a reduction in the amount of energy-related taxes payed by households.

Thinking about the Portuguese case in particular. Wonder if that couldn't be done with the Abadie data for German Reunification 🤔

Has anyone used synthetic control methods to estimate the impact of coups? E.g. instead of a panel data approach a la Acemoglu use sudden transitions from authoritarian regimes to democratic ones

A lot of these World Bank posts are great at summarizing modern causal inference methods, don't miss it.

I've been getting used to gganimate and thought it would be useful to put together some illustrations of what various causal inference methods *actually do to data* and how they work. Here, for example, is what it means to control for a (binary) variable

How to challenge dollar dominance? Can there be a truly multipolar world? I discussed these issues with Minister of Portugal (President of Eurogroup), Minister Paulo Guedes of Brazil, Zhu Ning and at . Watch here:

Metacontrarian take on nCoV: Your panic is the real pandemic. We live in an age of anxiety, where global connected media have driven us to a fever pitch of unhealthy obsession with irrelevant distant events. Our brains are hijacked by amplified signals of primitive threats.

People with aphantasia and no inner speech make so sense to me. How do they go from point A to point B without getting hopelessly lost? What do they even do in the shower, or in a plane?
